Origins of vertebrate gill function

This cartoon was illustrated for Dr. Michael Sackville as an accompanying piece for his publication in Nature. We were going for an image that told the whole story of gill function and the diversity that follows as it becomes more of a gas exchange surface, allowing for more aquatic niches to occupy and extraordinary feats of aerobic performance.
